I had 18 as a five letter word for ‘search for intelligence’ (military slang I think) minus its central letter (focus), but I could be wrong...

18d: Definition in the last 2 words
A word that means the first 3 words with the following 2 applied to it (the tricky part, I’ve never seen this before) is followed by another word that covers the rest of the wordplay.

18d was also my last one in.
As someone who enjoys an occasional gin 11a was my first in!
I think I’m missing something with 17a. Is it a poor homophone? The end of the clue escapes me though.
Other than that a most enjoyable puzzle.

Hi Rossim, yes a rather poor homophone, the way I say it anyway. This person has a second, the role of the second is described in great detail on the relevant wiki page

Hi, Warden. It is a hidden. It's a contraction that should be spelled - - - ' - & is a v brief way of saying you'd like to do something with the person you're talking to.
