10d, If you add 2 letters meaning former partner to the answer, you get a word meaning "attachment"

Thanks Brendan and loge. However I still don’t understand 16. Does it end TRE or TTE. In an earlier post someone said it was an anagram of TREESETS. You are saying it is an anagram of SETS plus THREE with an S missing. Sorry if I’m being completely dumb on this one.

Hi Xij,

It's an anagram of 3 x "sets" minus one S so = "sets + sets + set" - there is no R - the "three" is just there to tell you how many times the word "sets" needs to be anagrammed.

Simond9x - I dont think there is is G on the opposite side after resolving the clashes so I suspect you have the wrong successful hunter.
You need to be heading in the other direction staring at the other lettered top row cell. Brilliant red herring.
There is no doubt about the correct highlighting but you could argue highlighting the first 5 cells of 35 would also be technically correct as this item was also a quarry for some of the hunters.
Really enjoyed this one - very clever puzzle.

Doh. Sometimes it’s the simple ones that give the most trouble. Thanks to you all.
I just want to say Merry Christmas to everyone, stay safe and let’s hope 2021 will be a lot better.

Losing the will to live on this one. One of those 'endgame takes twice as long as gridfill' nightmares. Have finally figured out the red herring and have the two negotiated times. However the letters I am left with for the successful hunter now don't make sense to me.

Is the first blank an R? Seems to be the only thing that makes sense.

Does the successful hunter have anything to do with the original hunters or the more modern hunter?

Thanks
