I thought the inverted commas superfluous (as well as drawing attention to the literary application of the definition) - sorry, Hamish - tiny typographical gripes ... and I was puzzled by the capitals for Erasures and Carol. And whether there was a significance in 29/27 ... Loved a lot of the cluing, though - I never knew Aneurin had that meaning. And the use of dreadful JRM - who was my "representative" for many years and with whom I exchanged many an impassioned email on my part and letter on HoC parchment on his - raised a grin ...

An ingenious and enjoyable puzzle. Thank you Hamish/Soup for taking the trouble to look in on this thread.

Very enjoyable. Have one left -15d This is one that has to be altered but can’t get the original answer. Any hints?

Jadzia, I'm just starting this, but I think it's a word meaning 'upper class people'
A word for 'away' in T(rossach)S

Jadzia49, yes, 15D worried me for a while, but "on vacation" means emptied! I have almost finished, but am having trouble with 30A and 31A. Any hints? and why is there a gender element introduced into 14D. Surely that's not relevant?

Pendragon, for 30 across you need to start with a (formerly?) famous frog puppet. 31 across - a Shakespearean reference in the def, with the wordplay being the message you might receive if your (Scottish) sweetheart had to go to hospital in the US.

The gender thing in 14 down just to show that medics aren't always men. It is quite common in Guardian puzzles.
