Yes, that makes some kind of sense - thanks... always assuming I'm guessing correctly what you're hinting at, of course (cycling some of the answer letters, then a break?). Anyway, I'll go with that.

That makes sense of the title, too!

Hello!

Having breezed through the Listener this week, I then crash back down to earth with the Inquisitor, so a few little hints would be welcomed. I've almost completed the grid, but just cannot figure out 2d, 3d and 7d. I have the hidden name in the down clues, so I know they all involve moved letters - and I have a good idea of the answers of the first two, but no idea how to parse them.

Also, should I have two empty cells in the second row from the bottom?

I have a feeling the map bit will be beyond me - and don't have any idea where to start with modifying certain clues before entry. I have plenty of clashes, though, so I'm guessing it's to do with those.

you should have 7 blank cells in the next to bottom row .....to achieve this you need to move the last letters of some down clues down one row.
2d ...the E moves form lEast into the 1st word ...so you are now looking for a scottish word for appearance... BRO for brother + O (last of blotto)

3d The O moves from cOasting into lose ...defn is now loose party ...ORGY OR ...soldiers + outside letters of GermanY
7d E moves ...defn is stone curlew ...KK are the middle letters

write out the changed clues ...you should notice a theme with how the letters appear in order in the grid....
RDN are inside the outline on row 2... next row 8, then 10,11,12

Ask again if it's not clear

Thanks for the help, kirky. I did look up that word for stone curlew but dismissed it for some reason. I can see the parsing now.

And I can't believe I didn't get orgy. After all, that's how I spend most of my evenings!

Anyways, I have a full grid now, so I shall go see what I can make of it. Perhaps your hints will make something magical appear...
