I'd found the spelling with a 'y' in the rather extensive Wikipedia entry. Also had a rather cunning entry for the 7 letters but it puts this rather large casualty in completely the wrong geographic location!

Thanks, and that's exactly what I've got. My problem is with the fourth letter of 20 across. If the answer to this clue is represented as ABCDE, the entry is CBADE, which means the fourth as well as the fifth letters are in their rightful (unmodified) places. Therefore they shouldn't be included in the area for consistency, which leaves us one short.

Yes, granama1 - I was expecting the big thing to appear at one point but it doesn't get a mention this time (we're dealing with much humbler places - but at least they're relevant!). Try 3 consonants together for the other place.

You're right, loge - and taking it out would make the highlighting more accurate from what I've seen... but it's that one or the rightly placed 'i' further down (43 highlighted cells would have been better, I think).

Agree with earlier comments on the 43/44 issue - it does seem rather 'fuzzy' because that odd cell could be added in a number of places depending on cartographic preferences it seems. Then again, you could ponder on the inclusion of the central cell at the top.

It's produce and currency of the same country (but the clue's a bit of a stretch, I think).
It's 4 letters for the sailor, only one for navy.
