5d - Can I just double check my answer. It's a royal house "stripped" and according to Chambers is "a Japanese species of aralia with edible shoots", but I can't see any relation to currency?

Sorry, my mistake - sold by weight of the same country (not currency) but that's the right answer, brendan.

Hi drxx, thanks, no it didn't hold me up as I had the answers but not the parsing. 5d was a timely reminder to me to look up even the most familiar words in Chambers. I now also know a little more about Liberian sailors!
I hadn't spent more time on the 7 letters but will look at your previous post with a cryptic eye now. (Just back from a rather blustery stroll).

Got it and the clue is clearly there in the preamble. Your earlier posts got me over the line. Thanks drxx.

Hi all, I’m not doing too badly on this having just started this morning, but I have a bit of a gap top left.
So a tip for 11 down would be good, I can guess the letter move of course. But with unreliable crossers, it’s a bit tough.
Also still can’t see 10d despite earlier clue. It’s a language ending ish I assume... and sounds perfect?

Have got most of the grid filled (1 ac being one of my last to get) - but still in difficulty parsing 33 - is the definition the first two words? FWIW my "shape" consists of rows of 3, 8, 10, 11 and 12 cells, with the 'start' and 'end' cells at (11,6) and (4,3) respectively. Also completely at sea with the '7 empty cells' endgame, as I am left with just two blanks in the second-last row! Where have I gone wrong? Any gentle nudges gratefully received!

For 11d I think the definition is the last 5 words of the clue, changing 'sides' in an illuminating technique.
For 10d the shifted letter creates a town in a country whose language is the answer.

Hi pentlandsound, I happen to have the map on my wall, and have had if for years. It has a large date bottom centre, hence it’s a ‘dated map’.
Why those cells are called empty, I don’t know yet, as you say, only two are empty.
I just need help to complete 22 and 23a now.
