Kirky, I think that one letter is highlighted twice. You need the rhyme which gives the start and supposed end point of the event. They start with the same letter.

Thanks Lumen - I was wondering about the odd proliferation of O's and Y's at the bottom of the grid! Eventually twigged what has to go in the 7 spaces - which entry enabled me to correct my suspect answer to 33 and parse its clue...!

For what it's worth, I have the same pattern highlighted as pentlandsound and I'm (unusually!) confident that it's correct and that the other option doesn't quite work.

Lilith, if you can explain the reason for your confidence without giving too much away, I’d be grateful. I can’t see how one option can be preferred to another, given that neither is detailed enough to be close to the maps of the event.

Loge @56

(I may well be wrong - it would not be the first time.)

I certainly don't want to give anything away this early in the week so all I can say is that in my grid there is an exact pattern to the way that the modified across answers are entered and it is thematic. Going for the 11,11,11 option would mean that this pattern is ignored in some entries.

You are absolutely right. I had seen the pattern but (stupidly) only applied it to the middle, rather than the first four, letters of 26 across. At last I have been put out of my misery, and once gatherings of more than six are allowed, I hope you'll attend the ceremony where I collect my Captain Thicko award.

Many thanks.

Intriguing. So either the first letter of 24a or the 4th letter of 26a come into play? So either means that a down entry must have quite an unusual spelling. The thick plottens, as they say.

You're more than welcome. I'd be more than happy to attend if only to finallly collect my own numerous awards. :-)
