Thanks merenz. I was convinced that the o was needed to make “loss”.

For what it is worth.

This one was simply too difficult for me. I succeeded in cold solving only two clues after three hours. I wish the first division well.

I'm plodding through this slowly. I have five features of the selfie but have a gap of 4 at 10 - 22d. Is this correct? Could anyone give me a nudge as to what it is?

You are correct, planks, and 'gap' is not far off the mark too.

Planks... it follows the word before. Say cheese :)

If I understand your problem correctly, planks, you need a 4-letter word that goes well with the 9-letter one that precedes. How do you know this person is a (9) until he makes a (4).

I'm nearly there but 41a is proving very stubborn.

41, anagramming the first word of the clue, plus the answer, gives you the last word of the clue.

Thanks both, got it now!

I have 41, the 3rd 4th and 6th words are the def and there's an anagram involved if I've got it right (not always guaranteed!)

Thanks, planks and buddy. Got it now but I must say it was quite an involved clue with an obscure answer. (Unlike all the other clues, he says.)

I’m now tearing my hair out over the endgame. I think I’ve separated the instructions at the correct point. I suspect I’m over complicating it and am missing something obvious.

If anyone is able to offer a hint I would be most grateful. I’m going to set up an alternative thread too in case such a hint might spoil the enjoyment for others... and in anticipation that a ‘May contain answers’ could well be required by others at some point...
