That one the hardest for several years in my opinion. I have hit an issue at the very end. All complete including end game except that I need an “n” in the second or third cells of 28 but crossing entries at 33 and 36 do not contain an “n” and do not seem to require “n” to be the letter added to make the instruction work.
Which one have I got wrong? They all seem to parse perfectly.

smithsax, 36a has N as an added letter at the intersection with 28d. And it is the second letter of a two-letter word in the instruction

Thanks quizling. Such a silly mistake. It had an r for the extra letter in 35 so was looking for an e in 36 to make a six letter word rather than 2, 4.
All done now. I hardly ever take this long to complete a listener.

You're welcome. smithsax. There were plenty of elephant traps along the way, and I agree it was one of the toughest for a good while. But I should also say I absolutely loved it, as a test of solving ability which stubbornly resisted any "cheating" aids. I accept I'm in the minority, but I wish we could have more like this.

So, this one has sent me almost crazy and I could never have done it without some help from this forum - and I fear I'll need two more nudges to get me over the line. Problem one is knowing where to put the extra letter in 46 across and problem two is making any sense of 29 down. Am I looking for a Scottish word for pale?

Hi Suzannah,

I can't help with 46a but 29d is hidden in the clue, once you remove the extra word - yes to the definition but I didn't get as far as the extra and missing letters:-(

Yes for 29. You will see it (literally) when you remove the extra word.
Once you have it the place for the extra in 46 is obvious.
