Before I waste too much of my life on this, is perimeter 10 a hyphenated word from Shakespeare?

Yes, and it sets the trend for the perimeter. I can't say this is a great deal of help for me, though. I hope this puzzle is not about an American comedy show which I never managed to watch for more than thirty seconds without changing channels.

Cheers, Foinaven. So do I - my children, supposedly bright, devoured that crap.

It's not what I'd call funny (the theme, not the puzzle) and it's much closer to home.
The puzzle's title is a big help (I think generosity is pretty thin on the ground everywhere else).

The perimeter is a huge help in placement and the lead character was fairly easy to have a guess at with eight of the first ten solutions placed, but it's early days for me at this stage. Hope that doesn't give too much away, but I think that this is more accessible than it first appeared

Happily not the theme that foinaven had feared.

Those working from the newspaper grid will find it even more difficult - I wouldn't want to tackle it without bars in the third ring.
