Thanks again tatters, I found this quite a struggle - not easy to cold-solve with little cross-checking and some very obscure words... but just enough of everything to slowly nose ahead (personally, I'd have liked another thematic ring).

I completely agree with you drxx. At first I thought this was beyond me, but the two lines slowly began to emerge. This led to a PDM regarding the 5 perimeter clues, which when knowing the definition, became quite easy to solve. Once all this was entered most of the radial clues became solvable. However, with no cross checking, several of the radials were a little obscure and caused me a great deal of frustration. This is an excellent puzzle, but with a little more cross checking would have been, in my humble opinion, one of the best of this year so far. Solving the last 6 or 7 radials, with no chance of help from anywhere else, spoilt it just a little bit for me.

I agree with the above. You need generous checking when you've got letters latent, unknown starting points in the radials, and obscurities all thrown into the mix. I found the same as Gitto regarding the perimeter.

It helped to get two words in ring three which looked like a name, and I'll admit to shameless googling to find the character, the title and the quotes. That made things a lot easier, but probably isn't how AOH intended us to solve the puzzle!

I'm with Gitto on this: it was pretty much a "backwards" solve, with the longest perimeter word going in first, followed by the 3rd ring phrase (after a very few radials), the rest of the perimeters and the name, leaving the great majority of the radials to fill in bit by bit, helped enormously by working out the second quote early on. Turned into a bit of a chore for me.

Agree with all the above. As a timesaver, I found TEA helpful for the last few recalcitrant clues, as it often seems to be with radial puzzles. Especially when the quote had established the letters latent

It is a good job that the two lines and the perimeter easily led to the author. The 6 asterisked cells are not in any particular order and omit a letter that is not technically a vowel. If those 6 cells were intended to lead to the solution, rather than fall out of the solution, I would never have solved this.
