Thanks Crates, I see what you mean, e.g in row 3 the 8 letter answer, then a space, then the 4 letter one. So one of these words must still make a word after the letter in the space is added, leaving one bar in the row.

But I am still short of material to fill the grid!

Have you split the 8 letter answer to 1d into two 4 letter entries side by side, eenk?

If you'd like to give a specific area it might help me understand the problem you have.

It's the middle rows. Counting down from the top, I have the answer to "interject....." And "golfer...." In row 7, while counting up from the foot my answers (many of which I have not solved yet) only reach up to row 9. I am feeling very obtuse!

I had not expected a row with no original answers in it.

Ditto eenk - after cold solving most clues, I assumed every row/column would have at least one 'normal' answer' - soon became apparant I had assumed too much....

That's where the numbers on the edge of the grid really helped, with 7 bars there couldn't be a normal entry in that row.
