simond9x - the bars you're unsure of will be confirmed by the endgame (and only then will you be able to split the clues 50-50).

All done - I seem to be getting better at the PDM's!! At first I really struggled with this, but a slightly fortunate and tentative stab at locating the longer answers helped greatly. Not my favourite band of mine by a long way, but a very enjoyable crossword at the end of the day. The final solution is very neat indeed - neat neat neat being more my type of song.

I have filled the grid and I can see what to put in the four dotted areas but I have no idea as to the song's title.

Please will someone kindly give me a big nudge in the right direction?

The song was recorded by a famous US 60s band but that isn't the version featured in this puzzle. It was also covered by a 60s female folk singer, with a slightly different title (the sub title in brackets).

Sorry, gitto - I see the band only changed the title for the LP cover - the track listed on the back has the same name as the female folk singer's version.

It's a 3 word title, Bananabean

Like bananabean, I feel, this isn't my area of great strength. I was around then, but my musical interests lay elsewhere. Googling 3-word title made by US group and female folk singer doesn't yield anything, and the 20 clues with words in supply a truly daunting array of possibilities. Where is there a loose end to tease into giving a lead?

Cockie, the info suggests that the title is repetitious so I'd look for a word that repeats in the grid. Hint: they aren't diagonal.

I have the theme and am working on what to put in the blank cells. I am, however, stumped by the across clue 'Sounds of joints...' Would anyone be able to give me a nudge? Thanks.

Thanks granma1. That did the trick - and of course I knew it (and loved it at the time).
