riversk - I think 6 is a bit loose, the synonym for 'fan' (4 letters) = to make a draught - but not with the arm - plus a (2 letters) letter inside.

Thanks, mattrom, I actually had the wrong word for 11ac - went for the other end, which fits better with 35ac?

6a is it a word that's more usually spelled with an H in it?

1a - archaic 'prayer' (4 letters) around 3 letters for 'power' (Latin) def = last 5 words in the clue... (but...)

No 'h' that I can think of.

...sorry - 1ac is (arch) 'prayer' around 'n(ationalist)' followed by Latin 'power' (3 letters).

I'm struggling with 19a - does anyone have a hint as to the nature of the comic character - are we talking a children's comic or a character from a film? Given the fact we have no letters to go on it is all a bit ethereal although I have an idea what the replacement word must be although how it fits into a set I cannot yet see.

I've "completed" the grid, have all the alternative entries and the 10 redundant clue words.
Have now been grid staring for ages.
Could anyone give me a nudge as to the hidden word and instruction please.

The instruction is two words (and the opposite direction to all of the thematic entries).
