Sorry about the polygon, Granama1. I don't know why, but I've always thought those were more complicated shapes, shapes with more sides. I hope I didn't send you off in the wrong direction - or for too long!

Just a quick point about the shading. I would assume that the shading must also go around the outside of the thematic objects in the three cells in which they appear.

After reading all the above I'm now in the shade-the-name camp (plus I think shade round the others. It was a bit ambiguous though!

No worries Malone, with your hint about 1a everything fell into place nicely. Which meant I got on with making face masks early (:o)

39 A musical term. The first four-letters sound like a (sharp) weapon, then the last letter comes from 'heard essentially', essentially being the usual crossword device...

Thanks Malone, I couldn’t see the wood for the trees.
I’m lost on 30ac - missing 2nd letter.

Thanks, numbskull. For 30 A I have a very common Scottish word for 'marketplace'.

Again I’m having a good run. Mrs Seal and I can’t leave our sandbank but there is no shortage of fish and I have plenty of time.
I’m stuck on 18down and couldn’t find the obvious solution in Collins - does it end in O or S? I think I have the first three letters.
Also could someone give me a hint on the nature or location of the three additional objects? Are they cannot connected with the game?
My thanks to the setter - most enjoyable

Williamseal, the word wasn't in my Collins (a very old one), but I tracked it down. It's with the O.

The objects are definitely connected to the game. If you have the name in the grid, there are obvious spots (!) for them to go .
