geoff172, the word removed from 38d did not appear in the version of the game I grew up with, but it appears to have replaced the "unusual" one in the more modern version. If you look up the specifically English version of the game on Wikipedia it will confirm it

Thanks Quisling for your courteous reply
I will do that. I suppose I should have checked that sooner instead of assuming that some things never change.
Do many people still play this game?

I suppose the faster game with many more objects superseded it after the war, geoff172. But Neville Cardus called Don Bradman "the Lindrum of cricket", such was the Australian's pre-eminence. I think the pace of the game, with runs into the thousands, is rather an anachronism now. I imagine the word at 38d was adopted so that the game could be played with the faster game's equipment

From what I’ve heard it certainly can’t have been adopted for colour television remembering that some games went on for hours and would not fit in to our hectic schedules.

It always puzzles me as to why a carte blanche is used when clue numbers are given and you are told that the grid is symmetrical. I can only assume it is to reduce the complexity of the solve, That being said, I found this rather enjoyable, mainly because the PDM which is usually the bane of my life, came immediately. Now for the crayons...……..

I just wanted to say thanks! For those of us who are self-isolating, you are providing a very valuable service. I owe you a drink when the pubs reopen.

Hi, Solues. Did you mean to post on the other Listener thread, where the puzzle was given?

Excellent puzzle but there is no indication in the preamble that the name should be highlighted too, is there? I would seem more logical to do so, but we aren't asked to, as far as I can see. To me, "bounded by" means within it.
