Like foinaven I needed to edit my post. First part should have said:

"Aspria, so are the three objects resting on the side of the object? Not really a likely scenario."

The confusion arises, it seems to me, from the fact that a boundary, like a point, is dimensionless. Sometimes we give it a real existence, as when a farmer puts a fence round his field. In such cases, it is generally accepted that the fence is part of the farm, so I'm an "in". This also covers the aesthetic points raised by others: the shaded area@s aspect ratio and the otherwise precarious (and illegal!) position of the three objects.
A twinge of sympathy for the setter - what a tricky medium is the English language!

Well impressed by the number of people that have completed this. Q? Did you cold solve everything before filling the grid? I've solved 80%+ but can't get going with the grid fill.
I have the removed letters, think I have a name but can't make it into a regular polygon (21 letters?).
So, hints and tips - 2d is the wrist problem an abbreviation?
1a - I have a couple of possibilities and what to do with the words but....
44a - tried several approaches and rummages in Chambers to no avail
Thanks!

Although my first thought was to exclude the name, I have decided that those points make a strong case for its inclusion, especially as that means it can then be seen that the three objects have been treated as specified, while the other occurrences of similar ones have not.

2 D. Yes, the standard abbreviation. The answer is a card game.

44 A. A common 'endlessly' + add 'in society', society being abbreviated.

I don't have a polygon.

1 A. A five-letter synonym for 'frolic' (unknown to me, but in Chambers) followed by a word in the clue. The answer is a movement in a Hungarian dance.

Thanks Malone. I was thinking that the shape might not be a simple polygon. Right. Head down again.

Does it matter which order the 3 extra items appear in?

Well, that was like a light going on! With 1a sorted the whole thing unlocked.the grid fill. I don't submit them but, if I did, I'd include the name in order to make the whole representation realistic. If the objects were outside it wouldn't be much of a game!
Erm..Malone, isn't the bounded area actually a polygon? I see now why mine didn't quite work without additions.
