I can only find 1 compound that begins with A and has 6 letters (it ends in 'I') but it doesn't look like it fits with the rest of the clue?

I think we've got the same one but I can't see how "before a meal" = AC or C?

yes - 'ante cibum' (before food) but the clue would better fit 'ante prandium'.

I have EA? Thought it might be the middle letters of "sent" around A(cademy) but can find no 'dead bear' reference.

The word I've got means "commendation" but I don't get the 'keep active' part.

I see it, I didn't realise 'A' was an accepted abbr. for 'active' but it's in Chambers.
