gabrielc - I have that answer on the opposite side (going up the way) because the endgame suggests the positioning is at a certain point in the plot , at least that's how I've interpreted the phrase underneath the grid.

brendan - they're all blank until the endgame.

I'm going nowhere fast with this - I've only solved about half the clues and have absolutely no idea where to enter them:-(

drxx -- i'm probably wrong since i've not cracked the endgame yet (just filled the lhs and the rhs) -- I guess they are invertible.

there are only 2x 11 letter answers, brendan - one for each grid (a clue has just been given to one of them - but I have it upturned in the first column, and it's been suggested for the other place running down the way... best wait for confirmation).

Thanks Drxx. I've think I've got the 11 letter word mentioned earlier but would appreciate a clue for the 11,4 one.

I think they are, gabrielc - but I got lucky (if I'm right, that is) getting the right orientation straight off, so didn't bother plotting the other route.
I'm not entirely sure, so I'll wait and see what others make of it.

brendan - 'passed over (='dead') for extremists' is the def - look at alternate letters in the clue.
