Son1of Rover1, re your message at #32, this is what I was alluding to in my post at #16. The symbol required for 36ac is slightly different from that required for 36dn. The same applies to cell 24.
Given the variations in handwriting and the size of the symbols in the cells, I don't suppose the minor differences matter very much.

The symbol in cell 31 is not he same. Check the internet.

HW7, I would agree if chambers verified that - but it doesn't - and it does for all other homophones used for letters in the grid - that is what is worrying me. It does say Q represents the sound /k/, but not EK?

I cannot see any problem with 39a. Chambers certainly does confirm the sound. Just look up the letter. The letter is sounded as a long vowel sound.

Thanks Murky, due to being an idiot I never thought of looking at the letter itself!!

Bit of a struggle with this one eg 11d and18a. I know what the answers are but working out the square where they cross is a ?? Particularly since 18a could easily be 2 squares for a simple letter/number solution. Similarly 1d - know the answer but the letter in square 21 is a bit of a surprise as I expected there to be a symbol as in 37d somewhere near the end.
Will give it one last push then probably swap it for the AZ.

granama1 - yes 18A could be 2 letters to fulfil theme - but not in this case - just the cell which crosses 11D. 1D you are correct - nothing changes in cell21 - the 1 change is earlier.
If you have answers for 11D and 18A you will see they share 2 letters

...actually they share 3 letters - but just first 2 show you what you are seeking...

Thanks crates, that's sorted out a few things. Including the mistake I'd made in 9a. Just 16a/17d to solve now although I'm puzzled by 'Boast' in 8d.
With 17d I assume I'm looking for a 3 letter waterfall?
