My 'plea' from last week.... and it worked! 13 pages of discussion with no major spoilers. So come on, we can do it again.

I've not even looked at it yet but just a plea not to put explicit answers or thematic material in BLOCK CAPITALS, especially if no-one has asked for it. The puzzles can usually be debated without necessarily being over-explicit. Just a request.........

Lexawkward, for 20d, the King is Charles 11, wordplay is a word for 'ring' minus an abbreviation for 'king'
3d. 'base' refers to a weight allowance to do with freight.

Thanks Mattrom.

Re 3D, that was the parsing that was tripping me up. Although it makes sense, I couldn’t find anything in chambers to support those letters being a synonym of base. I think the parsing is actually : (a letter) + (set on) + (base)

Lexawkward, I think you''re right about 3d, common interpretation of "base".

Overall it was perhaps a bit too easy (but why am I complaining!). However, I can't parse (or even complete) 36ac. Tips please?

I have a full grid, but have some serious doubts about my entry at 39a, otherwise completely happy.
