I now have the first letters of 12a entered as I?I?I?A?S, Peterm. Something is wrong.

Peterm - For 6D, I went with cons first. The actual word to be entered isn't what I would consider a pairing, although it is an opposite.

Yes, your first I is wrong. I think 4dn is explained earlier. It's a themed clue, the pairing of a common word for "people" in the plural, with the "side swapped".

Nikki, your first letter for 12a is wrong- think of what follows event in a black hole for the first part of the unentered partner.

I have now entered a V in 12a. Now at a loss for what I was sure of in 4d. Tearing my hair out.

I'm glad you've got 12ac. I can't add anything more to the parsing of 4dn, but if you've got all the crossers right, there aren't many words (it's a common plural) that will fit the grid.
