Congratulations SW and many thanks kt17 for a simple word that generated some quite complex clueing!

Congratulations, SW and Cheers, Kt. The 'mote/may' connection also came up in a recent Spectator puzzle. Should there be a ? or ! if it's an &lit clue?

What a pleasant surprise! Thanks, KT17, for choosing my clue from the, as usual, varied and clever contributions. Thanks, also, for my prize. Believe it or not, "Withnail and I" is one of the classics I have never seen. (No point now - I've just seen the end!).

ChrisE, I almost posted something along the lines of "Substance of Pullman's work in progress" since, as I presume you're aware, the second volume of "The Book of Dust" is nearing publication.
