Hi kt17

#22 is just a cryptic def.

It alludes to the layer of dust often seen on old tv sets in households where cleanliness was not a priority, the surface trying to sound "crosswordy" about dodgy old movies.

Hi, KT17. Ginge is spot on. Subtractive anagram.

"Earth" - definition
"Wind" - anagrind
Fodder - "and Fire bust-up" minus "If near pub"

(Thanks, Ginge)

ChrisE you'll have to help me, a non-Pullmanist, here!

Yes, you would have to have read the books! "Dust" is something (never fully explained) that flows through the universe, and supplies the essence for the "daemons" - in essence, external souls of the inhabitants of that reality.
Feel free to ignore the clue! It's way too obscure.

Thank you ChrisE - your entry will very much not be ignored!

And the Pullmanist explanation you give very much chimes in with the biblical usage which has been bubbling up through other entries, and is paralleled in the prize that will be given - albeit these, unlike yours, are uni-planetarial*.

*I do hope I've coined a 'hapax legomenon' there!
