Thanks, Jacknatter. All correct now. I got a VHC for a PD clue 18 years ago. I thought I wasn't going to get over the first hurdle this time!

Thanks jacknatter. I've got it now - all finished (apart from writing 'PD' clue!).

sam - that's better than I've ever managed in a PD competition, and not for the want of trying - I've reached the point of accepting that writing PD clues is just not my forte. Or even my thirte...

Ok, I’m truly stuck - tho very intrigued.

Are my following insertion point assumptions correct?

No problem at all:

10: t/ally
11: ar/k
16: pin/ts
5: f/ound
6: ro/ller
8: de/n

29 is sto/ut, your others are correct.

JackNatter - re 34ac. I had WAS as the beginning, which was plausible in a "makes reasonable sense" way. It didn't even occur to me that there might be viable alternatives! Yours is much better.
