Thanks Chrise But was Edgar Allen a novelist? A short-story writer (and poet), I thought. But if Maskarade meant him, that would still leave TICAL for "money". ???? I have a feeling it's not POETICAL at all, and a further feeling that I have completely messed up the grid! Put me out of my misery, someone.

Many thanks, jazzgirl. Pretty obscure, like a lot of this puzzle. But I can heave a sigh of relief now, and throw the damn thing away!

Picked this up on holiday in Canada and wished I hadn't! Just three left, non- themed e, e?a.?r?o? Which I gather is an anagram of rosie ate but I am none the wiser even though it's a fruit. Secondly, non- themed S which is S?/S?, fencer's exclamation during duels - as always, and lastly thematic d which I have as Dagan but can't parse. Help!

Sorry, I have now got the "S" and "e" solutions but the parsing of Dagan is still a mystery.
