I'm not against organised "official" firework displays, Rosalind (apart from the argument that the immense amount of money spent could be put to better use?) but I don't think fireworks should be on sale to the general public.
Your cake sounds an immense success - why a tennis court? a belated Wimbledon celebration, anticipation of the Davis cup - or is just for an individual tennis enthusiast?

Rosalind, very kind of you to make a 'complex' cake (decoration wise) for a neighbour, while getting ready to receive your visitors tomorrow !

Elle, My brewers is a 'millenium edition', it says so on the front cover, but also on the page opposite to the Contents page - ie 'millenium edition 1999 - reprinted 2000.

It says exactly what you mention re. aeschylus, no more.

Hope you can see a bear, but I remain sceptical !!! They don't live their wooded area that easily and there are plenty of trees there!

Bonjour, Elle!
Yes, a nice idea that a rider can go ahead to meet his family. Wife, baby, old Granny etc. Good tradition.
Not seen it for a while though.
My Brewer's is a paperback 18th edition which was published in 2009. 2010 for my paperback version.
Edited by Camilla Rockwood.
I think the present one is the 19th, published in 2012.
The time gap suggests a new edition is imminent.
All the info regarding editions/dates is at the front of my book.
I also (naturally enough!) have Brewer's Dictionary of Irish Phrase and Fable,...so I do.

There is nothing more annoying than a short-sighted eagle! I think they are the reason hard hats were invented.

Hello, TheRogue!
Hope you enjoy the first day in the mountains!

Hi Pigale,
What, no bear?!
Now, Brewers.....I have searched everywhere, and unless it's right in front of me and I just can't see it (!) there is no printing date shown!
Nor do I have a Contents page... I have 'Preface'?
The book is so old , the pages have become discoloured - they are yellow , and browning round the edges!
I'm just curious to find out just how old it is but so far can't find any edition number or printing date.

HI, Rusty!
"The Brewers Mystery"!
The only reference to ANY date is where it says "this volume, a facsimile of the 1894 enlarged and revised edition will certainly find an equally enthusiastic readership"
No other dates!
What did yours cost? maybe this will be indicative of the era it was published?
Mine was £11.95 - so decimal currency - not quite out of the Ark, then!
Oh and it has
ISBN 0 86136 788X at the front.
I'd just like to find out how old an edition it is.
Any ideas?

(Of course you would have Brewers Irish Phrase and Fable - so you would!
I would expect nothing else!)

Hi, Rusty!
You are full of good ideas! - yes, that worked - up to a point... I found out that the volume was published in 1988 - no other info.
No idea from whence the book came!
It looks ancient , yellowing pages , browning at the edges........ cannot remember getting it......like 'Topsy' it "just growed"!
