Ah, now I much preferred that version by the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem.
Although I have never heard of the group before .......Aran sweaters not withstanding!
(My husband had an Aran sweater, too, when I first met him!)
It was a more tuneful rendering than that by the Dubliners, don't you think?
Yes, seating arrangements all sorted ...we can seat ten at the dining table so no need to do a buffet.

Yes, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy did that song the best.
They were especially popular in the USA.
Sold out Carnegie Hall several times.
I love the "belting out" songs like that one.
And it is the only one I could guarantee to get through without forgetting the words!
Unfortunately the lads are all dead, now.
A lot of us "folkies" had Aran sweaters!
I do not think the beacon gets lit.
Usually a rocket from the town hall roof, then the first footing and the long walk home!

Oh dear, the poor dog is hysterical....the fireworks are so noisy!
In my (ill-gotten) youth , when I lived up North, on New Year's Eve, we would all go to a dance, and then leave shortly before midnight to go to the Watch Night service at church...... then go on to an all-night party!
Then I would go straight to the hospital the next day, work in the lab till lunch time...... and then go home!
Great fun!
(I have most probably told you all this before !)
It was quite a culture shock when I moved down here , and discovered that - in comparison - New Year meant very little!

When I was young I loved New Year but it has changed so much.
It used to last for the best part of a week.
No, the ceilidh starts at 23:30.

Yes, a lot of things have changed over the years - some for good....some sadly for not-so-good!
The thing to do is to stand tall, and stick by our standards and what we believe in.
That is what is important,....doing what we think is right...for ourselves and our loved ones.
But this should be a happy time...full of promise and good will!
I'll wish you a Happy New Year now, Rusty - albeit a little early, in case we get caught up, nearer the witching hour....
