Following on .... the more I think about it, I think that we are over-complicating things. For example, I think the crossword compiler's book title is simply the four letters from the grid (which is the usual title employed, rather than the the long-winded full title from Darwin).

My feeling is that the title simply suggests a change (evolutionary change if you will) from a M---- to a human (i.e. a P----).

A good puzzle this and fun to do. King Edward stumped me for ages.

I reckon ixion's interpretation of the middle row is right enough. If you don't like the the last 2 letters being the first word of the title, they might also be defined by the last 3 words of the full title. Just a thought.

Well, for the record, the full title is:

On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life.

So what are the last three words of the full title?

OK, I have managed every clue that have had hints to (mainly without the hints) but am struggling with 4d, 23d, 28a, and 24d. Think I must have gone wrong somewhere but can see where! Any hints please ...

Thank you ixion. Had more or less sorted the first three but wasn't seeing 24d. Odd where different people have brain freeze!

Is there any point trying to complete this crossword. My online version does not allow me to access the bottom line so that I cannot complete the grid and submit it. Has anyone else experienced this problem.
