Thanks!

1a: think race abb., low as verb
Ah, OK

11a: financially unsettled; abb. king removed from a 4-letter n'man
EA(R)L?
LO(R)D?
PEE(R)
nope, it's just not happening for me...

2d: it. wd we all know; vb for thrash
It. wd. I obviously don't know! I guessed it wd be an It. wd., thought it would have E for energy on it, but couldn't think of anything. Still can't. (Does it start with 'L', BTW?)
cappuccino, pizza, centrocampista... my Italian's a bit limited I'm afraid. Any more hints?

I'm off to finish (& then eat with my other half) a boozy trifle, then it's 'Only Connect', recorded so we can freeze it for the walls.

All hints welcome.

Last try (otherwise I'll be accused of helping too much):
11a (before it's changed)begins with D (not R), a common title
2d (before it's changed) begins with B, meaning "Enough!"

Last one. Still can' t get 19a. And also when it says change the middle row, I already have 'origin of species ' there, so what does it change to?

Thanks (& to cmk) - I got it as I walked away after switching off the computer! Doh!

2d (before it's changed) begins with B, meaning "Enough!"
Really? I had 'pasta', losing the final letter and adding 'e' to become 'paste', as in to give someone a pasting. I couldn't see what it had to do with Mussolini, though. It then became 'taste' because it clashed with 'motto'.

What is this mysterious Italian word for 'enough' that everyone except me knows?

Oh - I've found the answer, I think, but I didn't know (a) that Italian word (why would everyone know it?), and (b) that definition of the answer, only the sewing & cooking ones.

Truly remarkable ixion. Kudos.

Looks good up to the last two letters though. Why should they relate to the first word of the title? (We are talking about the FULL title I assume, which has ten letters if I'm correct.)

Not convinced for ON.
