19a: Your O is in the right place. Before the change, it's a word that corresponds to the first 3 of the clue; leave "in" out & you have a pretty important river.
32a: before the change, it's simply a homophone
6d: take the 1st 2 words of the clue separately; together they form a synonym for "credit" as verb.
24d: before the change, complete word = exploited; without abb. it means overlooked.

19a yes O ends up being the 1st letter - you actually need a 6 letter word then you "lose IN"
6d I/m sure what you have is ok - ist 2 letters = when, other 4 = board defn is credit ( poor clue for me)
24d you need a 7 letter word then you lose the U
32a a type of beet, sounds like it's been overcooked

Ixion: I'm still trying to work out what you meant! Which 3 req. elements? Which new word? Which
first 8 words? Sorry, I must seem even more obtuse to you today! Hope we're talking about the same solution!!!

For once the instructions seemed comprehensible, and I found the theme early on. But, not only am I still stuck on 2D (L?S??) and 11A, but I cannot think of anything to evolve from the six letters in the middle. Ah well, it's early days, but I usually like to finish on the first Monday!

I might be over interpreting it GK....my "17ac" word has it's first three letters defined by words 6/7/8 of the title, the fourth defined by words 2/3/4/5 of the title and the last two are the first word in the title

That is absolutely ingenious of you, again, Ixion --- but I really wonder whether that was in the setter's mind! If so, incredible!
P.S. I did try "playing" with the title earlier, but of course failed to see the relevance!

Hi, I just got back to this and am enjoying it so I don't want to see any answers yet!

But I can't see what 15A can change into, because my 5D and 15D crossers don't conflict with my answer for 15A. So the only thing that can change is the last letter of 4D (which I haven't got yet) - but that doesn't make a word out of 15A.

For anyone who's finished it, am I on the right lines with 15A? anag of FELONS + XI in the middle, meaning things that bend

And is it the 5th letter that changes?

The 3D crosser is OK, too.
