Finished in just under 3 hours - an excellent puzzle, and more satisfying than recent Geniuses.

Me,too-----except:
Can anyone give me a hint on 24d? It seems NOT to be the obvious synonym for "exploited", otherwise the letter change necessary doesn't produce a new word (as in all other cases).

Plenty of time to think about it though!

Ixion: you change all 6 letters (not just the first one!) & end up with an example of the theme idea!Mind you, again the 6 new words have to be real ones! The second one's pretty exotic.

Thanks GK...I was wondering what "manner suggested by the book" meant, clever of Picaroon to have spotted the three required elements for the new word in the first eight words.

If you want a print version with black squares:
from online version -
Select all
print
cut out grid
copy girid at 125%
stick to 'print version'
copy
A bit of a faff but quicker than colouring in.

Finished and I have the book title and how to alter the middle line but I'm stuck on four which I'd appreciate hints for (hints only, please, it's early days).

There's only one word that fits the letters I have for 6 down, but I can't fully connect it to the clue.

19 across is foxing me completely. I know one of the letters has to be O because of the theme, but is it the first one? (Though if it's not, it might invalidate my altered 15 down.

I'm also stuck on 24 down and 32 across, but I'll persevere.

Thanks
