I think that 20a refers to running out of ideas, thus “going stale”. I am not sold on the last three letters of 11a either dougalf.

I don't see where the last three letters of 11 come from either.
I got 20 from a word search, but have never heard it.
I found 24 through Google, but they don't seem to do what the clue says!
Not seeing the "marmite" parsing of 15, but I don;t like Marmite.

I don't mind the last three letters of 11a as a "protected place" in the sense of a place where e.g. sacred objects or lots of animals are protected and then the whole clue becomes the definition.

Seems like that must be it actonhighstreet.

plutocrat and chrise, try putting "engraved" before your search for 24. Though still not the choice of words I'd use for them!

dougalf
The hits I got were either for "plaque", or included "name".

24a dates from the time when workplaces had discrete offices, I think. I had one once upon a time.

All done except for the parsing of the obvious answer for 15a.

Italian? Three year old? Any hints please.

Definition is "outstanding" but not in the sense of "very good".

Re 15a think about what the last three letters of the answer mean in Italian. The NW corner held me up a bit, but got there in the end.

Thanks bowergirl. I don't think the clue works, though, as the first 4 letters aren't a word in Italian.
