Finished this in near record time (for me). Got the title of the book (which I've never read), carried out the instruction (which I was able to do by Googling the book), then nada. I've spent twice as long grid-staring as I did doing the actual crossword. Google hasn't helped me at all regarding the narrator (which it doesn't seem to mention) or a five-word phrase. I'm probably being a bit thick because everyone else seems to have finished it easily.

Oh! Thanks, I didn't realise. I don't think Google indicated that. I'm just going out so will look again for the phrase when I get back.

I have been an aficianado of the writer since my teens and have, coincidentally, been re-reading this particular series of novels. The plots are formulaic, but are rescued by the sheer brilliance of the writing.

So I had no problem with the substitution, but am flummoxed by the parallel lines. The narrator has to be the obvious suspect but I am struggling to see the surname. I am obviously missing the bleeding obvious!

Hello all,

If anybody is still following this thread I'd welcome an insight into the parsing of 11a and 4d?

Thanks all.

For 11 take e out of ceases to get cases so a word for smith “cases” o for over, with s at the end for Stokes.

In 4, remove the r from Ron so o for on is amidst a word for broods (a verb.)

Thanks Darla, I was on the right track with 4 but 11 went right over my head.
