Jack - you are completely off base. The 3rd word of the instruction is a common preposition. Perhaps you mean the 2nd word? If so, that refers to a 6-letter unusual name.

Thanks, buzzb. I’ve obviously caught an edge and ended up head down in a drift…lt’s happened more often than I would like - I remember one occasion when I cartwheeled about 75 metres and popped the central joint in my collarbone. When I tried to get up, both arms just flopped and eventually I finished the run looking a bit like a penguin. The local French GP dealt with it summarily, standing behind me, arms round my chest and then pulling against his knee braced on my spine. It worked - and, boy, did it hurt!

Rambling reminisces aside (having been out for dinner for my wife’s birthday and - all too obviously - well refreshed) I did mean the second word. My brain had inserted a definite article not in the original instruction. But my second word is 5 letters meaning an alternative name.

Jack, you have two choices: a) try to make sense of the labyrinthine plot and work out the name that way, or b) search the grid for an obvious straight-line candidate. I know which I did. Wiki will point out the change to make. After that, parallelism is your friend

Thank you, Dodgepot. I tried the first method which led me seriously agley. There is a much simpler substitution which was immediately obvious once I had followed your lead.

All done now. Many thanks to Skylark for a puzzle that I made far too complicated for myself!

I have completed, and enjoyed this. But I am not entirely happy with 33 down, which seems a bit feeble. Any views?

Thought it worked fine using the two different definitions of the answer and the wordplay provides a good surface for the clue as a whole

I agree, eenk, that 33d was an unsatisfactory clue. But I did enjoy the puzzle.
