If you spell out #1 as "number one" the first five words become an anagram ("hit").

It’s a complicated partial anagram. #1 is “champ”, then an anagram (hit) of “song never a” containing “up” , followed by “a”. Definition is “track on a #1 album”

Yes, quisling is right. I was relying on faulty memory. 🤦‍♀️

ganda, in case you were wondering, 20/17 is similarly structured, an anagram (rallies) of time = t + for the mind-blowing

Thanks darla and quisling. I see it now. Some others we couldn’t parse but could let go. This one had us bugged.

I'm probably far too late for anyone to see this but should the question mark in the clue for 7 down be an exclamation mark? I've never heard the word before now but from what I have found out the answer is a word meaning "!"

Cas, it’s also known as a “bang” and I’m sure I’ve seen it clued as such.

Late to the party as ever, but finished it with help from several gentle nudges ... including the very first post where "I'm a fan" made a connection!

But, if anyone still around, where do the last 2 letters of 23a come from? From a late forum post I now understand the first 3, and it showed which of two possible "college" answers was the right one, but ... ?

FOI: 18a
COD: the very clever 23d
LOI: 23a

A tricky one, but when I picked it up again today I suddenly saw 5d and went on to crack the other remaining mysteries with help from here. Thanks!

Pamd, C is an abbreviation for college, followed by the beak, looking over (i.e. reversed) and then H is hopeful’s entry (opening letter), leaving “form” as the definition.

Last two letters of 23a are College Hopeful's entry
