You have to reverse the "beak". I agree that "peak" would have been fairer. (I really didn't like this puzzle!)

I don’t normally do the Grauniad apart from the Genius and holiday specials but I noticed that this had racked up such a lot of traffic on the forum that it might be worth a look. I’m very glad that I did notice because I thought it was huge fun. I haven’t laughed so much over a crossword for some time. Many thanks to Enigmatist.

Jack, quot homines tot sententiae, and all that, but Picaroon’s clueing is always a delight. If you’re at a loose end you could do worse than try one (he’s also Lavatch elsewhere)

If anyone is still out there, really struggling this week. Been through thread but still stuck

Perhaps if someone could give me a nudge on 8 down and 20/17

Many thanks

Dm, 8d is a parliamentary expression for a firm instruction to be ready to vote.

20/17 is a summer sporting event, a long anagram in the clue. Rallies is a hint. Equivalent taking place down under at the moment

Thanks for the tip,Quisling. I’ll certainly keep my eyes open for those. I have nothing against the daily Grauniad, but usually once I’ve blundered my way through the Listener, IQ and EV there isn’t a lot of time left in the week that the demands of real life doesn’t fill up.

If anyone is still doing this, I’m baffled still by 13/2. Pretty sure of the answer involving a pair of brothers (?) but what makes this a cryptic clue? Thanks
