Havermonkey, dhope, you are describing something I’ve seen as described as “percolation theory” (a term I rather like).

It describes digesting a seemingly insurmountable problem then going away and doing something completely different while some deep recess of the brain ponders the problem. Then when you come back to it, you make an immediate breakthrough… or something like that.

Hi Amaturestick,

1a - Ist letter is "A" from the clue followed by a 3 letter "spring", then, starting from the other end you have 4 letter "pin" (think 'skewer') then a 5 letter slang term for "money" (I've never heard it used in this sence in my entire life) both reversed/'return.

25 is a pretty awful clue - what sort of definition is that? - but, to be pedantic, the answer is a mixture rather than a compound.

The word for money used in conjunction with ‘daddy’, is perhaps the only modern usage I can think of.

As usual, Chambers disagrees - def. no.4 "An ingredient"

Chambers off the wall again! There is a very specific meaning of the word, and a more general one, but in neither case could it be regarded as an "ingredient". It could be a mixture of more than one ingredient.

Thanks Jono , something that often happens with crosswords and now I have a name for it.

I suspect you are a chemist, as I am/was. It always irritates me when words I regard as chemical terms are used out of that context. A particular one that always gers me is "organic" food!

Yes I am/was.
Even loosely, though, the answer to 25a can't be an ingredient as, by definition, the ingredients must be plural!
My particular hate is "omega 3". Any advert that includes that doesn't know what is talking about. The correct usage is "omega-3", where the "-" is "minus".
