Okay, thanks for the clarification Birder.

3d - 3 letter "chum" reversed/'from down under' + "I" from the clue + 5 letter "saw" (in a romantic way) - definition is "getting stoned" but it's not a common word and has nothing to do with drugs.

Hi Brendan
I read 12 as 2 letter religious army around base and 4 letters for horrid.
Could use a hint parsing 19D please?

Bobfos
19d parses as 2,4,1 using the first three words of the clue. The definition is a little obscure, I’d say.

Thanks Brendan

I was totally on the wrong track and I see that I have a wrong answer for 8a

It wouldn’t surprise me if some people put another city into 19d and move on without properly parsing.

I parsed 12 as Brendan did, bobfos.
The last three letters are indicated by ‘that’s horrid’.

There are two cities I know of that fit the crossers for 19d, but the European one parses much more easily! It's 2,4,1.

Hi Bob,

19d - 2 letter "cheers" + 4 letter "rave" + single letter "round" - definition is "European city"

Regards 12a, you're probably right, once I saw those elite soldiers I didn't look any further:-)

Me neither, jono. I had to check that it was a city, and I thought I knew that part of the world reasonably well.

Brendan - I’m pretty sure you’re right re 12a, though I can see that bobfos’s parsing also sort of works.
