Interesting I hadn't thought of that Potter despite The SD being one of my favourite ever shows. Bought the soundtrack as well which formed the backing to my Christmas that year c. 1986 I think. Gambon will always be him for me being too old to appreciate the other Potter.

I know I will probably regret asking, but in 12a (Soldiers defending base that's horrid poorly (7)), why is "base" the letter E? Or isn't it?

e (approx 2.718) is the base for natural logarithms. It comes out of calculus.

Terrific puzzle I thought from Picaroon. Clever misdirection throughout perhaps on this occasion with few really stand out clues. But thoroughly enjoyable. As others have said, a lot of GK required. 26a meant nothing to me but it's not a genre I particularly enjoy. The SW held me up for ages for some reason.
