I was completely stuck on 16a for ages too. Unfortunately I made it harder on myself by spelling 14d the wrong way round like Emma, giving me the wrong crosser :-(
I recommend the version of Emma with Jonny Lee Miller for those people who struggle with Austen. Sacrilegious, I know, but viewing Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility also encouraged me to pick up the books.
I assumed Bob was referring to the name of a very popular children's comic publication (which you could get from the crossing letters in the first word if the third letter of 14d is an O) rather than an actual comedian.
