It's the amount of mixer you might add which is also a polite exclamation of annoyance.

Sorry - laptop deciding where it was going to arrange my words. I meant to say
I can't get 16a and 18d. Any clues?
As I'm posting for crossword solvers you would all decipher the original.

Lots of GK.

Geeker - do read Emma - one of the best novels written in English (though most of the better ones are hers also!)

druh6sm - I find the short words, especially four letter, the most tricky. Here I can think of at least 4 possible answers. So don't give up.

To help a bit, or is this too much...

8a think of The Beatles

2d anagram

9d anagram dropping one letter from clue

14a think wine or monochrome

14d - this was written by Jane Austen was it not?

How do you fit that in?

HelenInGlos - 16a put one word in the clue in capitals - what is it then?

18d - cooking requires what, and after the meal is ready, what then takes place

I have never read the novel but just looked it up and the main characters surname takes you to the clue... sounds like...

HeleninGlos-

I'm guessing from handle that you're British? 16a would be impossible if you weren't.

In 16a, 'case' is the big clue. Think typesetting rather than a container.

Not v confident in my answer for 18d tbh. I went with cockney indicating a dropped aitch for a (loose) synonym of 'cooking'.
