AdeA and Roof,
9. two examples of the answer are hidden in the clue, which I think is intended as &lit.
3. a three letter word (chewed) inside two letters that when interpreted with a conjunction are the cockney for mouth (a two step process which explains the “?”).

Roof,
21,7 first two words are the defn. The next three are each synonyms.
10 four letter art work inside four letters fat, usually combined with a similar sounding four letters.

I went to Imperial. Know the library well. I still have book but I dread to think what the overdue fine might be after 35 years.

Thanks Jono. I had two other Cockney words for mouth - I think there are several. And I had the wrong first word for Gaia, a bit more Earth Mother-y if you see what I mean. All clear now.

Well, I'm very glad to see that some people enjoyed this, but I'm afraid I didn't, despite usually enjoying Paul's offerings. Several of tge clues I thiught were really not good. I managed to complete it, with sime difficulty, and a little help from this forum, but there's just one thing I'm still not clear about. Surely the clue to 9a must contain three examples (mustn't it?) but I can identify only two. Any help?

Or is it two examples, one of them repeated? If so I think it's a rotten clue.

Actually, to be fair to Paul, despite what I said, there were several clues that I liked, alongside those that I didn't. My favourite is 6d, with 12a in second place.

Snowwhite@48 you are so right about Araucaria, I have two of his books , must try to find the one you mentioned. Many years ago I wrote to him c/o the Guardian about a clue. His reply was written in the most elegant and beautiful handwriting . Truly a wonderful man whose crosswords were full of brilliant allusions and at times a delicious sense of humour!
Must add my thanks to Paul for the date .

I did exactly the same thing with 9d. Threw me completely in north east corner for ages. Don't get the parsing of 6d and had never heard of 2d character, but my shipping forecast knowledge is spot on!

Nelliegee,
6d is an &lit with a play on ‘nut’ (which can be interpreted as the head).
5 letter word for ‘yet’ inside (entertained by) an anagram of nut.
