Havermonkey. A type of faith very popular north of the border. I haven't parsed it yet.

2 parses as 2 inside 7, but I needed Google to verify the 7. The solution occurs from time to time in cryptics.

Does the italicization in 17 serve any purpose other than giving away the theme? Seems like a generous hint by cryptic standards.

Thank you! I know it well but usually with a longer ending. Phew, that would have driven me nuts.

Hi geeker
I think 17 would actually be less misleading without the italicisation; the italics suggest the song rather than the more mundane interpretation.

Hi Everyone

Got the theme straight away, but no idea what 8/24 is despite googling. I knew 4d from reading Anne Cleeves and watching Shetland on the telly, but I am seriously struggling with most of the rest.

Chris, I thought I'd read all of John Buchan, but a very long time ago. I shall have to google that too.

I'll try a bit longer using the hints I've picked up from here before deciding to give up. I'll be back.

Strangely, despite being American and having no idea, 4d was one of my earliest ones in. Was struggling desperately to get a start and reluctantly concluded Google was the only avenue.

Hi roof
I read the Buchan at school, but I don't remember much except the title.
As I said earlier, I just put 17 and titan in Google, and the first hit gave me all of 8,24

Help pls. Having trouble parsing 9 in spite of earlier discussion. Also can’t parse 3. Have correct answers for both I think.

Hi Chris

Well much to my surprise I've finished. Thanks to the hints here. I tried googling 17 and Titan and got nowhere, but checked out some of the poems and found the line. Not one of the poems I have ever come across, perhaps because I'm a vegetarian!
Anyway, getting 8/24 gave me lots of crossers and together with the hints was a great help.
Having said that there remain a number I can't fully parse: e.g 3d, 10ac, 21/7 and 9d. I know they are right because they match the definition.
My FOI was 17ac closely followed by 4d. (Well done Geeker for getting 4d). My LOI was 6d and 15ac, though the latter was obvious, 6d less so.
I was very sorry that 1d wasn't Ursine Baboon, but there was no "s" in the anagram so it was not to be.
I usually like Paul, but I can't say I enjoyed this one. So no CODs

Chris, I read lots of John Buchan from the library at Imperial College when I did my M.Sc. I also read lots of out-of-print Wilkie Collins from there.
