1a is an insertion of area in a 5 letter word of which bay is type (in fact Arachne could have just gone for a homophone).

1a the bay isn't a geographical feature or a plant!

As someone mentioned earlier, 9a is the easiest clue in the puzzle. Have another look at the clue.

9a An old chestnut that should be obvious if you have the crosser from 1a.
