You may have moved on OptO but you should have a closed loop - are you highlighting the right cells?

Candledave, sadly no, I have not moved on yet. I am assuming that the six letter word I am starting with is correct: it could be the identity of the subject of the puzzle, but I do not think I am allowed to be any more specific than that here. I have searched for synonyms of this word, but none fits in the grid in either of the appropriate places. Still grid-staring!

0pt0 look for a 4 letter synonym of the obvious alternative reading of the identity you have found and see that this is also a name associated with the subject.. The symbol should help identify where to look

Thanks for trying to help me Candledave and Jack Aubrey, but I still can't see it. I can see a four letter synonym for the six letter word I already have and it is also the name of an associate of the theme of the puzzle, but it does not form a closed loop. Still grid-staring!

It seems as if you have it. Does your 4-letter word begin one square to the left of the 6-letter word?

Darla, yes it does and then it goes left and then diagonally up and left, but does not form a closed loop, which is what I was expecting.

Opto, you can track the same letters going anti-clockwise from that starting point.

Enjoyed this up to the very long grid stare for the second word. As others have said, think this is a GWIT unless you know a bit about the subject.

One loose end for me is 5d. I have the answer as no unches and I think I have the changed letter, but I can't make head or tail of the definition or the wordplay.
