Roof, 13a is an anagram of (a word in the clue + an abbrev for "nurse").

11d is fairly obvious once you see the (crossword favourite) 4-letter African nation to scramble.

2d is an anagram of ("to their" plus an appropriate [musical] key).

Thanks all for putting me right on 2d. No wonder I can't get 12ac. I still haven't got 1d (?A?O??) and 23d (R?A?E?) and would be grateful for hints for these three, then I can put this horrible crossword behind me and relax.

I thought I had all four across SIs, but then I discovered I'd got 19ac wrong and I'm not sure if my new 19ac includes an SI. Just seen it! I've got all 8downs.

12 is a double definition, with "books" in the sense of reserves, arranges,...

1d is a standard 2-letter crossword abbrev. for "boatman" inside an uncommon four-letter word for "threaten". Defn "hard work"

23 is a tough one. Definition "you". A 3-letter anag of "are" followed by a reversal ("climbing") of a 3-letter colour ("rose").

Roof

The clue would read the same no matter who compiled it.

Thanks Geeker

I'd thought of this answer to 23d, but couldn't see the rose.

I shall continue to think about 1d and 12ac, but I need to go and sit on the settee so the cat can sit on my lap. He's getting agitated.

Roof. Re. Your cat. It reminds me of my Grandmother. He's getting agitated. Who's she? The cats mother? Bit of a roundabout pun but this is a cryptic forum.

Forgot that little phrase Minno. Never really understood it.

1d still eludes me also Roof. Even with explanation on here.

Our cat is nearly 19. Always agitated but her legs don't allow her to sit on laps anymore much as I know she'd love to.

Hi Rocky,

1d - this is a type of "hard work" prisoners might have been made to do.

Boatman, in this instance is a two letter acronym of a person who works on a boat
