Thanks Bren, my parsing of 19 was wrong (I was looking at the last three letters) but I see it now.
I think I have gone wrong with 12 in that case.

All done bar 5d and 10a. Any clues welcome.

Two hours in. So far has yielded six answers. I have a very obvious answer to 27a but I'm not seeing the SI theme at all so haven't written it in yet.

Think I need to take a break and return as my brain is frazzled with this.

5d - 3 letter "conquest" around one of the SI's - definition is "heavens" (I'd never heard of it!)

10a - anagram - another unusual word

27a - there are two answers that fit the definition but only one has a SI word - if it's any help the answer does NOT begin with an H.

Completely baffled for 20 minutes until I noticed the SI. Always read the instructions... 19a was my gateway to working through the puzzle. Good stuff.

That's a big help Brendan because that was the route down which I was going.

Brendan - re yours at 16: that was exactly my thinking for too long re 6d, convinced that the last 3 letters had to be ACE. 🙄
