Will, I agree with Smellyharry that the word, in the singular is in the 13th printed edition.

The entry gives you 4 examples. But not the lengthier one which needs to be slightly 'unjumbled in the grid'.

Eenk, getting the wrong missing character in the Crafty sergeant-major clue makes it difficult to understand the end game. But you could try staring at the grid and guess!

The theme word is in Chambers is as an adjective - pluralised, if you can do such a thing.

Thanks to all. I thought it had to be an e, but then my left hand column of extra letters does not make much sense.
Whistler, I don’t t think I have any problem with the message down the rh side.
The title of the puzzle points me to the LHS column to unjumble. Is this correct?

Eenk, the characters from the LHS clues are not jumbled, they read as is.

Matron, I meant the letters down the LH column of the grid, where an anagram of a word in the title almost appears.
My extra letters down the LH column of clues read as is until the last two or three, and then do not make sense.

That's a red herring, eenk. Probably coincidence. Look elsewhere for what needs to be "unjumbled."

Also, I took the last two letters of the LHS of extra letters to be the standard abbreviation.

Took me a while to work out the end of the lhs. You have to take the last two letters as a noun I think, which is a bit loose IMV.
