Stuck on 20 down d-C-, Grid entry needs to be anagram of answer to clue: Gave a signal and hit with a stick (4). I have tried reverse engineering .. Many thanks in advance

... that gives the word produced by the wordplay but, as you know, the actual answer as submitted will be an anagram of that:-)
